It’s the best time of year and we at Hermanos are making it even better by curating two limited edition Christmas specialty coffee beans - Santa Rita Honey and Finca Las Brisas - just for you.
You’ve also probably seen on our socials that we’ve put together an exclusive Christmas gift set consisting of both coffees and a double-walled cup - the perfect present!
Finca Las Brisas
Finca Las Brisas is produced by the Alvear Family. Their farm is located in San Agustin in Huila, Colombia, a region renowned for its award winning coffees. Boasting a perfect combination of excellent soil and high elevations, Huila is one of the largest coffee producing regions in the country and is known for sweet and fruit forward coffees.
It wasn't easy for the Alvear family to cultivate this bean. Javier Alvear and his family’s coffee farm came upon hard times, and in a last push to overcome economic challenges, he decided to combine farms with his father and brother.
The three pooled their resources together and concentrated on cultivating a single high quality variety of specialty coffee – Bourbon Aji.
With the family focused on producing superior quality beans, their efforts paid off when the Hermanos team visited them earlier this year. We sampled their coffee, found it to be really impressive, and thus decided to include it in our exclusive Christmas range.
We visited them again in October 2023 to reconnect and the family told us they were hard at work improving their farm - building processing and bean-drying infrastructure, expanding their coffee varietals, and are now proud owners of 10 hectares of specialty coffee plantation. Read all about our October visit here!
Santa Rita Honey
Our Santa Rita coffee comes from one of our existing farmers, Santiaga Salazar, who also produces our El Calapo beans. Santiago’s from Santander, Colombia. His finca (farm) has been in his family for 10 years and is located on the eastern Andes mountain range in an area called San Gil. It's surrounded by plenty of natural water and rich soil – ideal for specialty coffee growing.
Fun fact: Santander is located in northern Colombia, bordering Venezuela, and is one of the first areas in the country to produce coffee for export.
What sets Santiago apart from other farmers is his passion for growing coffee in an environmentally friendly manner. He is dedicated to combating deforestation – actively planting trees within his coffee plantation. Not only does this increase the biodiversity of the natural environment, it also allows his coffee plants to thrive in the shade provided by the trees.
His reforestation efforts were clear when we visited him in October 2022. He has six different types of coffee plants on his farm. In comparison, he's planted close to 60 different species of trees as part of his reforestation efforts, which equates to around 20,000 trees in total.
During our visit, he repeatedly highlighted how quality is a key factor in his coffee-growing and processing methods. Everything, from picking to fermentation to milling - is done with the intention to produce the highest quality of coffee possible.
Santa Rita is a testament to Santiago’s emphasis on ensuring quality in his coffee production. Santa Rita is a great example of what a high-quality coffee with nutty and chocolate notes can taste like. The ‘honey’ drying process , which really brings out the nutty notes of the coffee while retaining its natural sweetness. You can read more about different coffee processes here.
Now, the question that we know is on the tip of everyone's tongue – why did we choose these two coffees to be our Christmas specials?
Well, we wanted to have two unique coffees that capture the spirit of Christmas with their distinctive profiles, giving consumers a varied experience across both spectrums.
Santa Rita is definitely the more traditional one of the two, with notes of roasted almonds and chocolate. On the other hand, Las Brisas has more vibrant and fruity flavours of green apple and lemonade. We’ve had both coffees in the filter in our shops for a while now and customer feedback has been great!
Additionally, both coffees are very suitable across all brewing methods – we guarantee they’ll make an amazing Christmas present for the coffee lover (or just anyone, really) in your life.
And as icing on the cake, our specially crafted Christmas gift set contains BOTH coffees plus an exclusive double-walled glass cup; it’s the best of both worlds indeed!
