Finca El Turpial: A Story of Resilience, Passion, and Exceptional Coffee

Published On: January 03, 2025

At Hermanos, we’re proud to present Finca El Turpial, a coffee that truly represents the spirit of perseverance.

Hear from Emerson Felipe Narváez Díaz himself as he tells his incredible story:

Cultivated by Emerson Felipe Narváez Díaz, Finca El Turpial won the prestigious La Mejor Taza de Mi Nariño Internacional 2023 award. This award-winning coffee brings together a complex blend of flavours and aromas, thanks to Emerson’s meticulous care throughout every stage. It's a labour of love that reflects Emerson's journey and dedication to producing exceptional coffee, even in the face of overwhelming challenges.

The Story Behind Finca El Turpial

Emerson’s journey into coffee farming wasn’t easy. Born into a family of coffee farmers in the Policarpa region of Nariño, Colombia, Emerson’s life was turned upside down by violence. The family was forced to flee their home when armed conflict claimed the life of their beloved uncle, and their farm was abandoned. Forced into displacement, Emerson’s life took a different path. Despite facing financial struggles and working a variety of jobs, Emerson never lost his love for coffee.

A testament to resilience, hard work, and a deep love for coffee.

His father, one of the first coffee farmers in the region, passed down a deep connection to the land. Though his father’s career was tragically cut short, Emerson made the brave decision to return to coffee farming and reclaim his family’s legacy. The farm he revived was located in the remote Cumbitara region at 2,700 meters, where access was difficult, and the farm was often ignored by others due to its isolation and the presence of armed guerrillas.

Undeterred by these challenges, Emerson single-handedly nurtured the farm and began cultivating rare and exotic varietals like Gesha and SL28, despite doubts from others. His vision was clear: to produce exceptional coffee. His hard work paid off when his SL28 varietal, grown at Finca El Turpial, set a record for the highest auction price at the La Mejor Taza de Mi Nariño Internacional 2023.

Hermanos and Finca El Turpial

At the auction, Santiago Gamboa, one of Hermanos' co-founders, immediately recognized the exceptional quality of Emerson’s coffee. After a tense bidding war with competitors from the US and Korea, Santiago successfully secured Finca El Turpial, setting a new national record for the region. As soon as the hammer fell, applause and cheers erupted from the room. The victory was celebrated not only by Emerson but also by the entire community.

His coffee is a tribute to his family's enduring legacy in Colombia's coffee history.

Santiago sat down with Emerson afterward to personally congratulate him, expressing how proud Hermanos was to have secured this coffee. Emerson shared the story behind Finca El Turpial, a tale of perseverance and dedication that moved Santiago to tears. Inspired, Hermanos made a commitment to share not just the exceptional quality of this coffee, but also the remarkable journey that brought it to life.
