Collagen in Coffee, How to Do It Right

Collagen Coffee Done Right:

Start With Beans Worth Drinking

Yes, you can put collagen in coffee, and that includes hot coffee. Hydrolysed collagen peptides dissolve easily in a hot drink, and an unflavoured powder shouldn't noticeably change the taste. But collagen only adds to your cup.

It can't rescue a bad one.

At Hermanos Coffee Roasters, the coffee always comes first. Get the beans right and anything you stir in, collagen included, just works. Here's how to do it.

Why Are People Adding Collagen to Coffee?

Collagen is a structural protein found throughout the body, including in the skin, bones, cartilage and tendons. Collagen peptide supplements provide amino acids and peptides derived from collagen, and research has explored their role in areas such as skin hydration and elasticity and joint health.

Keep expectations realistic.

Collagen isn't a magic ingredient, and it doesn't replace a balanced diet, enough protein, exercise or good sleep. The real appeal is convenience: if you already drink coffee every morning, it's an easy way to remember your supplement.

For the greatest nutritional benefit, choose a collagen supplement with a clearly labelled amino acid or protein profile and maintain a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals.

Why Good Coffee Matters for Collagen Coffee

Collagen is the add-on. Coffee is the main event. Whatever goes in the cup, you're still drinking the coffee, so the beans, the roast and the brew decide how your morning tastes.

• Great beans. Freshly roasted coffee gives you aroma, sweetness and body worth protecting.

• Natural energy and focus. Caffeine is a well-known stimulant that can help you feel more alert.

• Antioxidants. Coffee is a rich dietary source of polyphenols, including chlorogenic acids.

Observational studies have linked moderate coffee drinking to a number of long-term health outcomes, though this kind of research can't prove cause and effect.

Collagen should build on a coffee you already love, not cover up one you don't.

Does Collagen Change the Taste of Coffee?

Unflavoured collagen peptides are designed to be neutral in taste. They shouldn't noticeably

change the flavour, aroma or body of your coffee, so everything we roast into our beans still comes through.

What does collagen coffee taste like? Like coffee. Flavoured powders are a different story: vanilla, chocolate or berry blends add their own taste and smell, so if flavour matters, choose unflavoured.

Does Heat Affect Collagen in Hot Coffee?

Yes, hydrolysed collagen peptides generally mix easily into hot coffee. Simply add the powder gradually while stirring to prevent clumps. Although high temperatures can break down whole collagen, collagen peptides are already broken down during processing, and normal coffee temperatures are unlikely to stop them working. A 2025 human study published in Food Research International found broadly similar overall absorption of collagen peptides taken in coffee or water, although some amino acid responses differed. Always follow your supplement's instructions.

How to Brew Great Coffee Before Adding Collagen

Collagen can only be as good as the coffee underneath it, so get a few basics right before you add anything.

• Grind fresh. Grinding just before brewing keeps more of the aroma in your cup.

• Measure. A consistent ratio gives consistent flavour. Roughly 60g of coffee per litre of water is a good starting point for filter.

• Use good water. Fresh, filtered water just off the boil lets the coffee shine.

• Pick beans you love. If it tastes great black, it will taste great with collagen.

Nail the cup first. Adding collagen is the easy part.

Ready to make your morning cup one worth protecting? Start with freshly roasted Hermanos beans, brew them your way, and add collagen on top.
